  • Chips off the old block - Children of the great

Had this idea for a thread a couple of days ago & trickstat gave me the title. A thread dedicated to news items or marks of about young athletes starting out who are children of famous athletes from <ahem> years some of us remember rather better than last week. There’s quite a few about.

Larissa Iapchino, daughter of Fiona May - sadly injured recently so won’t be taking up her earned place for ITA in the long jump at Tokyo.
Mykolas son of Virgilius, going to European & World U20s with a new discus U20NR of 69.77
Eilish daughter of Liz McColgan, NR in the 5000m at Oslo last night.

    That sort of thing,

There’s a few more active I can think of

Dvorakova sisters, daughters of Tomas Dvorak, both young heptathletes for CZE
    Erki Nool’s son.

    Any more?

Not an athlete father/son duo, but I always enjoy the fact that GB U23 international and 2020 1500m champion George Mills is the son of former England footballer Danny.

On a similar theme, Emily Owen is ranked 4th in the UK in 2022 in the under 15 100m. She is the daughter of former England striker Michael. I believe her older sister appeared on Love Island.

The Murofushi's were pretty good Hammer throwers .....

As were Dave Smith and his 2 Sons Alex and Peter.

    And the Litvinov's as well.

Sorry to hear Larissa is injured, she was looking very impressive.

Thomas Staines (also appropriate for the Missing in inaction thread!), son of Gary Staines and Linda Keogh.

Obiously not active, but 1976 Olympic javelin champion Miklós Németh was the son of 1948 hammer gold medallist Imre Németh (both were also World Record holders)

My dad was a big cricketer in his younger days and was telling me he was told by an old friend that a former Hampshire cricketer had a boy who was going to the Olympics. His name? Rai Benjamin. Dad, Winston, played for the Windies.

Alana Boyd (Denise Boyd's daughter) the other obvious one I can think of...

One of my personal favourites is Remigius Machura senior and Remigius Machura junior: quite possibly the first father/son to have served drug bans during their careers. Now that's a chip off the old block!

Sergey Makarov - Olympic and world medalist in the spear and 6th on all time list is the son of Aleksandr who won spear silver in Moscow 1980.

Greg Duplantis was a 5.80 vaulter. Son is a little better......

Great call on the Nemeths fchd!

Rodion Gatullin, 1988 Olympic Games silver medalist, 1987 Word Championship bronze medalist, 2x European Champion (1990, 1994), 2x World Indoor Champion (1989, 1993), 2x European Indoor Champion (1988, 1990) in the pole vault, and a member of the very select group of men who have cleared 6 meters, has a daughter called Aksana Gatullina who won the European U20 gold medal in the same discipline in 2019... matching the achievement of her father 36 years previously.

Then you've got Sonia O'Sullivan and her daughter Sophie, who won a silver medal at the European U18 Championships in Gyor, in front of her mother who was cheering her on from the stands.

Apparently, Joe Klecker who is on the US men's 10000 team for Tokyo, is the son of Janis Klecker who ran in the marathon for the US in Barcelona in 1992.

                      Some other American examples:

Calvin Smith, who was often the US's next best sprinter to Carl Lewis in the '80s and his son, Calvin Smith jnr, who has run in the US 4x400m team.
Ryan Crouser's dad Mitch just missed the US Olympic team in the DT in 1984 while his uncle Brian was a double Olympian in the JT.

As an aside, world high jump medallist, Vashti Cunningham's father, Randall, was a decent high jumper in college, but gained much greater renown as an American Football Quarterback.

Yes, in the opening post. They didn't mention that Dad was an Italian international pole vaulter though!

Nobody's yet mentioned Jake Wightman. Dad Geoff ran in the Commonwealth Games and European Champs while both mum Susan (nee Tooby) and aunty Angela competed at the Olympics.

On the Crousers, Ryan’s cousin Sam was an Olympian in Rio - JT with an 83m PB and his sister Haley is a 55m javelin thrower.

Luca Bigg competed in the 800m at the British champs last week. Little way to go to match up to his illustrious mum Sally Gunnell.

                        Aston and Jonathan Moore

And of course it wasn’t just McColgan’s mum who was an athlete

Yes, her father Peter still holds the Northern Irish steeplechase record.

Also her stepfather is Commonwealth 5000 medallist John Nuttall and her stepsister Hannah has run a 4:15 1500m this year (her mother is former international Alison Wyeth!).

Erki Nool’s son is Robin, a Pole Vaulter, still in the NCAA.
