It is interesting in all this reasonable disappointment at what is likely to be a messy relay that probably underperforms, that we are talking about a team that will have athletes who have run 20.15, 9.97, 20.05 and 9.93 this season across the four legs. Compared to, say, 2011 when it was 10.17-10.14-10.19-10.13... chalk and cheese!

the 'potential' time for a lineup of Gemili-Hughes-NMB-Prescod is a 'stratospheric' British record ... but we all know the many pitfalls that comes with a men's Team GB relay ... Indeed Luckyspikes might consider applying one of his prediction competitions to this alone [Dropped batton legs 1,2,3., False Start, DQ handover out of box, injury pulled up, and thats just off the top of my head] Plus, dare I add, even when they win a medal, it is no longer the end of the story...

In all my years of watching Team GB 4x100 relay qualifiers [or not] for champs, I dont think I have ever seen such a vast contrast in the mood of post-race interview, where both have quaiified. The women were as positive and together as I've ever seen... the men, the complete opposite.
NMB tried his best to come up with a new way to fail a handover - by offering the wrong hand - and Prescod did his utmost to take the baton outside the box...
I'm going to try and stay up and watch the final live... I must be certified.Comment

On the brighter side : messy handover and all , they got the baton round and qualified for the final. Unfortunately basically forced to go with just this imperfect line-up ; but they have a lane and therefore a chance...
If (big if !) they can get the changes spot on tomorrow they could surprise us all. I didn't have huge hopes for them once Kilty pulled out but am pleased they have made it this far - and we all know how unpredictable relay finals can be so not writing off their chances.
The women looked very good. Add DAS and they are going to be right in this - though you'd think as long as Jamaica stay upright they have a mortgage on the Gold. Fingers crossed for a good result .
Will be interesting to see how the 400 women fare in their heat. And I am still mortified to see a global competition without GB representation in the m4r but will have to stew on that for now !Comment

Timing really is everything…no doubt selectors didn’t think it was worth it at the time, but we’ve since had MHS’ bronze, AHW’s 45.05 and Dobson’s 45.27. I’d like to see Makoyawo focus on the 200m next year and look to offer a leg in both relays - I’m sure his college team will utilise him on bothComment

Women looked good with Dasher shaped power to add.
The men though….Gemili looked slow. Prescod looked slow and from the final change it was obvious that he hasn’t done much recent relay running. Although if you could boil it down to PBs - which you clearly can’t - this would presumably be our fastest ever team. How often have we previously fielded 4 sub 10 men?Comment

For the men’s relay I’d like to see the first three do their normal thing, but to have Reece just start at half pace The risks of messing up the pickup are so great that I’d rather sacrifice a few tenths. If Reece is in form he can still run down a few. If he’s not, well, we ain’t going to medal anyway. Just as long as he gets to run. -
I think we’re seeing four people in their first attempt at that formation. At the same time, bar the US, we were only 0.4 off second place, with all bar maybe Jamaica running their strike four/no one else to bring in. If Gemili gets out a bit better, and with a better 3rd handover now that they’ve done it at race pace, they’re right back in the mix -
Suspect they may not have practiced as much as ideal either.

Got to be a bronze medal there surely for the womens 4x400m team. Without NED and POL I can’t see the other teams besides JAM and USA stepping up that much come the final.
Would like to see Jessie Knight come in for Ama Pipi as I think she’s shown great potential on relay legs. Can’t remember many standout legs from Pipi in all honesty. But I’d be surprised if they change any of the runners or the order now. Especially as Knight didn’t show top form in the hurdles.

Yeah, Zoey Clarke had a shocker in the mixed relay, and unlike AHW who also was poor on the day, didn't have the opportunity like he did to run herself into form in the individual 400m.
Knight too wasn't really at her best in the 400m hurdles either.... If only Jodie Williams had returned to action a few weeks earlier...

It should be noted for posterity and hopefully a nadir that is never reached again ... but there is no England men's 4 x 400 relay entry at the Commonwealth Games, Birmingham 2022 - Indeed there are no home nations entry at a home games.

I haven't checked to see if there are 'semifinals' for the 4x400 relays [EC Aug 2022] ...
Amazing to think a season ago I was bemoaning the fact we couldnt put together a decent quartet...
I am still a little concerned it will put extra workload onto MHS, who will be needing a long break. Great news about the bronze for AHW, but until he breaks 45 for the individual I will not get too excited [anyone else remember Robert Tobin...]
i want to see what Charlie Dobson can do, of course, but so far his record asks more questions than gives answers.
I still say we 'encourage' Zharnel Hughes to run a leg, and what better opportunity than here and now...

Medal for the taking? Making the assumption that Dobson is fit, and Brier is capable of something 45.x on leg 3, I'm struggling to see another team who looks as good as AHW, Dobson, Brier, MHS. You'd think any other nation would need a good 10m lead on anchor to feel safe. Belgium ran 2:58 at the Worlds but Kevin Borlee is now injured, while none of France, Czechia or Poland broke 3:01.
Not counting any chickens, but if I were a betting man I'd have GB for gold. -
Also, AHW did something that Rob Tobin never did - run well in a major championships. Tobin's 45.01 was a true one off which he never got within 4/10ths of a second of in the rest of his career, after the 2009 season... he did run 45.15 at La Choux de Fonds (lol) and 45.30 in Rieti during 2009, and ran a 45.50 heat in the Berlin World Champs, but then followed that up with a 45.90, 7th place finish in the semis. His record in major champs following that year (when he qualified for them) was poor to awful.
In fact, after reaching the semi finals of the 2010 Commonwealth Games, where he didn't break 46 seconds in both runs, as an individual athlete and being a member of the GB 4x400 squad at the European Championships, Tobin *never* put on another GB vest and was never close to doing so ever again. He only ran sub 46 *once* in a national championship, post 2010.
AHW, aside from his terrible leg in the mixed relay in Eugene, has run to the best of his abilities and above, and showed true grit to get the bronze yesterday. Tobin never came close to winning an individual medal throughout his career. AHW had won one in just his 3rd major championships as a senior.

OK, RunUnlimited, I was being unkind in my Tobin comparison, and I am genuinely pleased that AHW achieved the podium...but somehow I'd much rather he'd had run a sub-45 this season, even if it meant he didn't medal, achieving both would be better

There are no Morning sessions in the stadium at the weekend so all the Relay heats will be run tomorrow Morning which presumably means anyone in the 200m finals will be sitting them out unless they want to compromise their preparation for that; same for anyone in the 400H finals. Seriously who comes up with these schedules?
Women's 4x1 I will make no comment on as I now have zero expectations. For the men, I know Efoloko has done quite well on leg 1 this year but I'd like Azu to run there as I think he can end up making that leg his own in the medium-long term like Asha has.
Great to see MHS is committing to the relay here, when I saw his name wasn't there on the entry list last week I feared he was opting out. Hopefully a quick time for the GB men in the final as well as a gold.
