Martin Rooney making some good decisions behind the scenes perhaps?

There was quite rightly a lot of positive comments about the two 4x400 relays. Both winning bronze was a well deserved finale to Budapest.

A lot to reflect on but I wanted to quote one comment

I think going forward this might well prevail as a policy. Unless someone is clearly likely to medal or at a minimum make the final, the question has to be asked, is it better for the 'team' if an individual forgoes any chance of a runout in 'heats' to focus their energies and chances on the relay...

I also think someone made some very tough calls ... The ommision of DASHER, MHS and VO, probably all for very different reasons, could have had led to very different outcomes. It is testament to each of the quartets that leaving out argubably the best individual did not prevent them from making the podium.

    Chapeau to all concerned.

I have to confess I was not anticipating the omission of DASHER but a welcome bronze.

A couple of observations... Imani Lansiquot clearly has a very good top speed, her back straight leg was impressive, I just urge her to compete more often over 200m. I am so pleased that Bianca Williams leaves Budapest with a medal, so often overlooked but a valuable member of the team [I write more about her elsewhere]. According to Ian Hodge, Asha Philip has now won picked up her 12th major relay medal with the first being the Eu20's in 2007. I still think she has an integral role to play up to Paris so I hope she can stay fit and healthy.

    Well done Ladies.

Given Asha has been out for much of the season, I think they’d have looked at options, just in case. Bianca running 22.4 makes a strong case…

I agree with that order making sense, but I doubt they'll use that tonight. Would they have practised much with DAS on first? Probably just DAS in for Bianca, which would keep the same order we had in Tokyo and Eugene. Tried and tested.

Fingers crossed that NMB is back next year.

Asha Philip has been a great servant for British women's sprint relays, but, would replacing her on the first leg for the final with DASHER make sense? I think Bianca Williams has also made a very strong case to be retained [see my comments elsewhere] and runs a very good bend... so for me, DASHER-Imani-Bianca-DN... if the baton changes went well, that is a national record breaking quartet ...

Oh, I see! I guess the issue is something like this year, where Prescod withdrew late in the game. EAD smashed it, so probably for the best in the end!

I know it's the rule, my point was not to select for the individual 100 anyone who's not willing to do the relay! Could still have the problem the women had with the best two making the 200 final, but at least would solve the Prescod issue if he's just not there and someone team-minded is.

It’s a WA rule - any individual 100m runners are named as part of the squad of six - hence ideally having different athletes in the 200m to widen the group

I'm thinking the 100m needs an extra UKA selection criteria of "willing to participate in the relay if called upon" and a history of not helping out = no selection. Having Ferguson in the relay squad in place of Prescod doing not much in the individual would've made the heats much less nerve-wracking - all credit to Amo-Dadzie though, thankfully he did great.

Hopefully nmb can get fit again and Ferguson can kick on. Then you have your 3. Your 100 runners are glave, twfa and I guess zh again or a resurgent ojie, and then a world to play with!

Indeed - a negative of doublers, if you have the depth. I’m thinking more that we need to avoid this year’s situation of just ZH and then we’re scrambling around for the 4x100m heats

I mean, I can't foresee a world where ZH and DAS/DN aren't 3 of the max 6 200m runners. So we're never going to have a crazy sized team.

The key is for people to qualify in the 200m, so we can have a wider squad available - name the three individuals, plus three more, plus the 200m runners, so we have options
