Now that the relay squads have been announced I am interested to know why Ashleigh Nelson gets into the women's 4 x 1 team when each of Desiree Henry, Bianca Williams and Kristal Awuaha have faster times this season. Bianca also gives us an extra option for the 'bend runner' if anything hapens to Beth Dobbin.... What was the thinking in chosing Ashleigh Nelson?

I think Kristal was out because she did the u23s.

Maybe Ashleigh does better in relay practices? She was also part of our very successful team in Doha.

I reckon the latter must be a factor? I agree I'd have put in Henry over her, but I guess if they're bringing the extra person as 'insurance' you don't want the athlete still coming back from a long term injury.

Desiree and Bianca have proved themselves this season on more than one occasion - I could understand it if it was their first race back and they got a faster time but they have done it a few times and the extra few weeks before the olympics would give them more time to get fitter.

Interesting relay selections for later on today.

    Ujah - Prescod - NMB - Efoloko

If Prescod hits 10.1x form later on (unlikely with the grim weather) and runs a solid leg, it would definitely have me filled with optimism again, with Gemili and Hughes coming in for NMB and Efoloko. Not that i'd write off NMB mind, just don't think his ceiling is as high.

Where did you find that? The DL website has the team showing as Ujah - Hughes - Kilty - NMB for me.

    A very solid quartet of

    Philip - Lansiquot - Dobbin - Neita

Daryll Neita also running in the 200m today in lane 1.

That is basically the top DAS-less 4.

Too be fair to Gateshead, the weather is set to be pretty good (by North East of England standards, anyway) today. 18 - 19 Celsius with a light to moderate wind, though cloudy. Certainly a heck of a lot better than it was in the earlier meeting in May!

(I just wished this was been held on the Thursday or Friday instead... the weather is actually set to be very nice, like, into the early to mid 20's and sunny, kinds of nice. Oh well, let's see how everyone performs today at the very least.)

A solid performance from both squads. The women will certainly benefit from including Dasher, and at least one hand over (Lansiquot to Dobbin) was dicey. Get the line up right, and the baton round, and they can medal. Philip-Dasher-Willams-Neita, yes, Jodie Williams, I think this is 'her time', she is in the grove, I like Dobbin, but Jodie just might make the difference between also run and glory...

The men... hmmm... they did well, and yes NMB was closed down, perhaps worringly so, but the baton got round, Hughes had an immense back-straight leg, and, no matter my irrational dislike of Kilty, he did a very good bend, and clearly wants this. Yes, Prescod was impressive (thank god) and down the final straight he might well make the difference between poduim or not... my instinct... go all in... CJ UJah - Hughes- Kilty-Prescod and make sure the latter do baton change practice, between each other, every waking moment from now to the warm-up before qualifiers ...

carterhatch - you almost ALMOST sold me on Kilty just then. I was always on his case over the years as he had an irrational chip on his shoulder and this unjust arrogance, but it's so obvious how much he's mellowed down and clearly sees things as they are. Similar with James Ellington I suppose, maybe a bit different for obvious reasons.

But no, Gemili is in that team all day long. He's the second name after Hughes for me. That back straight in 2017 was ridiculously good, when he's ran the top bend he's been top class. From the top of my head, in 2013 and 2019 respectively; his lead offs were world class.

@cartherhatch They all want Olympic medals; Kilty isn't alone in that. But ultimately no emotion when it comes to selection. The best team this year has to include Ujah; Hughes and Gemili. The 4th spot is up for debate and we can also debate running order. I'd be astonished if the likes of Christian Malcolm & Darren Campbell who presumably will select the team aren't in agreement with me.

'at the end of the day' - as long as Team GB medal, in any kind of combination, I will be a happy man, and just to show relay discussion is not the sole preserve of athletics ... see link

Working on the Luckyspikes' Olympic prediction competition has made me revisit my relay lineups...

I firmly believe there are three medals to be won, Women's 4 x 100, 4x400 and Men's 100. Without wishing to distract your efforts from said competition, anyone else willing to guess the lineups should Team GB make the finals

      Women's
4x100 I would have had Philip-Dasher-Willams-Neita, (but the Women's 400 final is in the same session as the relay final....ufff ... and fully believe Ms. Williams will make the final, having sub 50 PB'd in semi) so... Philip-Dasher-Dobbin-Neita
4x400 Ami Pipi - Laviai Nielsen - Nicole Yeargin - Jodie Williams (For a very hard fought Bronze..)

      Men's
4x100 CJ UJah - Hughes- Gemili-Prescod (I have been convinced by others that Gemili will not let us down, but a bronze is the best we will achieve.)
      4x400 - The Under 20 quartet...

      Mxed - not a scoobie!

The women's 4x100 should be an easy Gold medal for Jamaica, with the Silver medal coming down to a photo finish between the USA and GBR. I think we will see a USA quartet of Oliver, Daniels, Prandini, Thomas vs Philip, DAS, Dobbin, Neita for GBR. I think the USA has a slightly faster foursome on paper. But GBR should have better exchanges because the relays members are very familiar with one another. I do expect GBR to win a medal in this event.

        Ill try be less....me! lol

But Id suggest the inclusion of Imani into the final, better leg speed, and possibly move Daryl to another leg.

Id also think that Emily will "demand" (read earn)a place in the final, late season consistency and I think will show form in the heat or mixed which ever she gets to run in

A random relay thought: normally anyone on the team can be drafted in to the relay.

But in Tokyo aren't athletes expected to go home once their last event is over? Can athletes not formally on the relay squad stay on just in case? Or could some teams have a problem in the event of injury or illness decimating their relay team?

I know this doesn't actually answer your query, but there must be some official differentiation somewhere of those athletes who aren't named on the relay squads because they are in individual events but who are likely to feature in them. For example, Mu and McLaughlin and the US 4x400.

I see the mixed relay has been submitted for tomorrow, Clark, Diamond, Brier, Chalmers

They ran so well 50.4 for Clark and 50.1 for Diamond. The women were on fire!

I agree with keeping the strongest women for the w4x4. As for the men....that's probably the best pair we have out there?

I think if they make the final and a medal looks plausible then better women will be drafted in.
