The BBC are reporting it. Although it would be unthinkable for them not to:

Update - it actually featured on the 3:30 News bulletin on 6 Music.

To me there seems to be a lack of understanding by some that society has changed radically.
What may have been accepted generally as marginal behaviour in the past has become completely unacceptable and punishable in 2022.
Conversely what was unacceptable, stigmatised or punished in the past is now tolerated or even lauded.

Young women may be greatly affected by behaviour which was of no consequence to them or anybody else 40 years ago.
Many teachers, coaches etc will have had to adapt, some of the older ones massively.
To me Minichiello is a person who apparently couldn't or wouldn't adapt. Would UKA, the BBC, Ennis-Hill etc have treated him in the way that they did if it was any more than that?
It is a shame because he gave a lot to British athletics. Does he really deserve some of the interpretations and comments made above.

My comment is about the past. It was marginal in the sense that no criminal or disciplinary action would have been likely. Hence it went on in some circles.
Any behaviour by Minichiello needs to be judged in context.
What just for example if sexual banter was initiated by the athletes?
We don't know the context of any of this.

There are hills to die on, but reading the detailed bullet points I'm pretty sure this ain't one.

True, as far as the narrow issue of Minichiello is concerned.
The hills dying will be a shame.

JEH finds herself in a difficult position, she spoke out when Sheffield Utd were considering resigning Ched Evans.

Going by the 4 bulleted allegations in the Guardian article, for me at least, yes.

None of these would have been considered acceptable behaviour within my living memory and I am 54. There probably was a time when people were more likely to get away with it however.

I think a lot depends on the nature of the actual incident. Reading between the lines, whatever TM did, it was very far from rape - there are no legal ramifications (at least, to date).

That may well be JEH’s stance - supports all people getting the chance to train and be respected…but stop short of publicly denouncing TM specifically

Laps Proving yet again that you would both-sides anything to defend the indefensible.

                The allegations are genuinely shocking.

He’s just put out a statement denying all charges and saying his side was not heard.

Louise Hazel has been talking about her complaints about him from 2007 (which didn’t get followed up on)

She’s just posted on Instagram - essentially the above sentiment

Explain to me how my words :-
"....he (Minichiello) deserved the result" is defending the indefensible?

Do one mate. Your attempt to minimise what the victims of his actions went through (did you actually *read* some of the allegations levelled against him? If so, then how you can be so blaise as to insinuate that the victims might have even "initiated" some of the sexual charged "banter" that Minichello was guilty of, for instance) is beyond the pale.
That is textbook "defending the indefensible", trying to find some vague reasoning for what happened. The attitudes of 40 years ago were just as unacceptable *then* as they are today. It's just that people are actually willing to speak up about their experiences, rather than suffer in silence (or in the most extreme examples, taking their own lives).

                        You're straight up pathetic.

Also, you got it dead wrong about Reider and Adam Gemili too. How's it like batting .000 on your dumb takes?

Intolerant words! Because I don't share your view of things and you can't debate sensibly. Sorry I won't be going away.

Hopefully you will never suffer from the rush of others to condemn you or yours publically, a denial to putting your case and a long delay all of which ruin your life.

The Reider investigation has been going on at least 9 months with no result yet.
I don't have a horse in the race as far as the result is concerned. Good if he broke the rules and gets the appropriate punishment.
Who knows whether the allegations are true, or justify any punishment? I do know that the delays and the publicity are a punishment in itself as Adam Gemili has found to his cost. Is that fair? Standing beside a colleague because nothing (yet) has been proven against them. Collateral damage I guess.

Before a coach is suspended, those involved in the investigation will have to be satisfied that they think complaints are more than just 1 or 2 embittered athletes making malicious accusations because they have a grudge against that coach.

                    • #27
You have to assume that the investigation was conducted properly and conclusions reached fairly. Society has moved on but the actions cited would never have been acceptable between a male authority figure and young girls. The “of its time” argument doesn’t hold much sway for me.

Where I might be a bit uneasy is that Minichello has issued a very strong statement completely denying the allegations and railing against the process. This might just be supreme arrogance or the actions of someone with nothing more to lose, but if he genuinely believes in what he’s said then this may be far from over. Worth a read if you haven’t seen it.
