He hasn't looked great so far in the outdoor season, though like Giles who also only started running competitively again outdoors just a couple of weeks ago, he is likely just race-rusty right now and could be ready and fully firing by the Trials in a fortnight's time. Another who could be under threat is Burgin, who hasn't run since that European U20 record run in Ostrava in May because of a "slight" injury niggle. Hopefully it is just a minor issue that will be ok come the Trials, but there is every chance he could come into them not fully fit.

However, this is a tremendously exciting time for men's and women's middle distance running in this country, and the British Championships 800m/1500m races will be some spectacle to witness.
Burgin is an athlete who is injury prone i think, and may not run successive rounds with ease; therefore, very talented as he is at his age, I have discounted him at this time for our GB OG team; the first two will be entirely dependent on a hot finish and positional place in the last 100 metres from which to launch the finish. The only one i personally favour for top two is Rowden, but the rest is, as it is said, a crapshoot. I would like to see Giles get a place after his tribulations.

    • At the Watford BMC GP, a terrific run for U23 Erin Wallace (trains with Laura & Jemma) - 4:08.12 beating Holly Archer & Jess Judd and taking 4.5s off her 2019 PB.

On the 9th you commented 'He and Phil Norman just need to 1-2 it and they're both on the plane. The only person who I think could spoil the party is Mark Pearce'

Well your intel is almost spot on! Vinco tweeted that 'Mark Pearce also produced a fantastic performance, taking five seconds off of his PB to finish in 8.25.43!' at NIce ... Can he get the OQ?

          • 6.08 LJ for Holly Mills. The Arona stream is much better today - I gave up on it yesterday.

Presumably it was an injury issue. Maybe a metatarsal? If I recall correctly Joyce Oladapo did the same about 30 or more years back.

trickstat I'm surprised folks here are not using a much more recent - and relevant - example of this.... Jessica Ennis-Hill switching take off foot for the long jump after the injury that wrecked her chances of participating in the 2008 Olympics. She seemed to do pretty well for herself after the switch.....

As did I! Better streaming today, but can you get live results for the LJ? I can't :-(

Well, looks like Britain will not have any representatives in the heptathlon at Tokyo 2020 (+1), Mills is not going to suddenly pull a 40+ meter javelin out of nowhere and she really needed a decent long jump to have a chance of getting into the 6200 range.

When was the last time that happened for Great Britain btw?

carterhatch Definitely a PB, added more than a meter to her previous javelin best of 34.29m set at the Loughborough Open last month.

Occasional Hope Yeah, I figured it had been that long since that happened. And there has still been no news, positive or negative, relating to KJT's fitness since we last heard. Considering where we are at in the season and with the British Champs just a fortnight away, even *if* KJT or Niamh suddenly made an announcement of availability, there is just no way either would be fit enough to get the standard or compete.

KJT has the standard from 2109; IF (and it's a big if) she can prove fitness I think UKA might still take her, as the reigning world champion. Would she be competitive, who can say without knowing exactly what stage she's at.

            • That outstanding performance by Dustin gets a response by some nutter on the crazies site,Letsrun, some "unknown" Brit runs a world lead. No wonder I think some of those brain washed schmucks over the pond are beyond the pale.

And JEH's JT wasnt good at the start, but she managed to get her PB up to 47m.

                • Holly Mills is in there pitching, and a great prospect. We should not be down about the youngster just because the expected medal contenders KJT and NE are not fit.

By the way, I'm following the weird results page for the individual disciplines at Arona, but does anyone have a link for the overall scores anywhere?

Meanwhile in other news: everyone in our house is singing a new song -- "Oliver Dustbin, remember the name!". Its catchy.

Calling him "unknown" just betrays their ignorance. Not very well-known and relatively obscure maybe, surprising certainly but no European Junior champion can be considered unknown. I'd like to think that no-one on here would call an NCAA champion "unknown", for example.

https://rfealive.com/results/20210610_1726:34:34:6:1? Here's the results for the heptathlon... just updated now with the javelin finished. Mills went from first to third after the sixth event, but is likely to finish with another 6000+ point total, though not sure she'll get a PB.

Also "Oliver Dustbin" is a the best! lol

                            I think a 2:12.00 800m would give Holly Mills a PB of 6219

felix51 Considering that she set her 800 PB of 2:10.84 at Multistars in April where her current points total PB of 6180 was set, then I think you make a good case for her on improving yet again. If Mills doesn't end up going to Tokyo, then she'd certainly be a top contender at the European U23's (that is, if Maria Vicente doesn't get the 6420 she needs for the Olympic standard in this Arona meet in the end)
