On Saturday night Jess Judd and lots of other people were celebrating her hitting the Olympic standard in the 10,000 ...

But, here's the thing - taking into account the 3 per nation rule, for the Olympic qualifying period she's currently ranked 34th on time in an event that only has a quota of 27 athletes. What if 27 of the 33 ahead of her want to run the 10,000 in Tokyo? With athletics having a maximum quota of 1900 athletes for Tokyo I don't see how WA can exceed any specific event quotas, and surely they'd have to say, "Sorry Jess, there's no room"??

If they have more than the allotted number getting the automatic Q, don't they just have to suck it up? and if there's an overall limit, perhaps not go to rankings for one other event?

It might mean even tougher standards for the next championships.

Yes, the absolute limit is 1900 athletes and WA isn't allowed to exceed that.

Either way, it's going to seem unfair to some athletes who believed they had qualified or were about to qualify via their World Ranking.

And all this because of joke Olympic "sports" like bloody skateboarding & breakdancing!

              Breakdancing isn't in until 2024.

I can't disagree over the rubbish new inclusions.

I'd rather see potential rankings qualifiers cast aside to allow automatic qualifiers in (subject to country limits and selection processes of course).

Personally I'd get rid of the football too.

And Golf, Tennis and Basketball. but keep the women's football. Nothing against the sports themselves but don't see any reason the multi-millionaires of sport should need the further glory of the Olympics.

No, that has already been taken account of for the 34 athletes qualified - the athletes above her who are not in bold are, on time alone, outside the 3 athletes quota for their country and aren't counted in the 34.

Are any of them qualified in more than one event? IE potentially running the marathon or 5K instead, or doubling at 5/10 so filling two spots with one athlete?

Yes, undoubtedly a few of those 33 above Jess Judd will opt for a different event, e.g.,Steph Twell & Ellie Pashley will be running the marathon only. I haven't checked the whole list though to see if that will bring Jess down to the top 27.

Also, I see what you're saying about 2 spots being filled by one athlete. I don't know if that's factored in to WA's quotas or not. If I have time tomorrow I'll add up the quotas and see if they equal 1900.

I was going to mention Steph. Sifan Hassan is probably one of those likely to double up.

Someone said Konstanze Klosterhalfen was injured, too - and that could potentially apply to some whose time goes back to 2019.

Incidentally, wasn't Sam Atkins supposed to be at the 10K trial? He ran that great time in December and nothing since, afaics. Hope he's not injured? I see he's on the invite list for the 5000 at the main trials but not down as accepted yet.

I'm pretty sure AW's preview said that he'd had to pull out of the 10K.

OK then, I've added up the quota numbers in individual disciplines which comes to 1794. However, add in 80 relay teams (typically 6 athletes per team?) and that comes to a lot more than the 1900 athletes quota.

Of course, like you said Occasional Hope , some athletes will be doubling so that total number will be reduced. However, I'm none the wiser really regarding what they'll do if the numbers are tight. I guess I'll just have to wait to see what happens!

Also, relay teams will often be composed of individual athletes (I would guess about half will be individuals on average).

For the relays it is squads of 5 for the single gender events (including any individual entries) , only a squad of 4 for the mixed relay per the World Athletics site

I think if you have a relay team and athletes in the solo event, you *have* to include them in your relay squad.
