  • 2021 European Indoor Championships, March 4th to 7th

We have a major championships to get excited about, happening in Toruń, Poland!

With national championships happening this weekend, national team announcements from across Europe should be coming in over the next few days. Post links to any such announcements here.

Usually European Athletics publish the final Entry Lists 4 or 5 days beforehand so we might expect those around the 27th or 28th.

There might be some big teams this year because it seems to me that the Entry Standards set by EA are a bit softer than usual, e.g., the Men's 400 is 47.85 and the Women's 3000 is 9:08.00.

I don't know if they've been adjusted downwards with COVID in mind, though there's been plenty of indoor competition opportunities with only a few of the usual meetings being cancelled. I can't verify whether they are indeed softer than usual because a lot of documents have disappeared on the European Athletics website with their redesign.

Also, in a separate thread, I will be running a Euro Indoors Prediction Contest again, our first Prediction contest for 17 months (or 15 months if you count Fantasy Euro Cross 2019)! Keep your eyes peeled for that 4 or 5 days before the championships start. I'm thinking at the moment it will have 3 elements, roughly equally-weighted - 1) Predicting champions, 2) Predicting British medalists (with the usual jeopardy of losing points for being incorrect), and 3) a new element - Predicting winning marks (with points awarded on a scale depending on how close you get in percentage terms). All will be explained fully in the dedicated thread.

Where did you get your entry standards from Lucky? The link I found lists the men’s 400 as 47.60. The standards set by BA are tougher as you would expect, I do find the standards set by EA in the field events quite harsh - 16.95 in the men’s triple jump, that’s more than the old world championship standard and would often get you into a world final. The target sizes for field events have been set at 16 and going by the schedule there will be a qualifying round and finals with 8 athletes.

Looking at the European rankings most events look in good health, it’s good to see things haven’t been affected by the pandemic too much. Back in early January I had my doubts about whether the championships would go ahead

Yeah, you're right. I was just grabbing those standards from my (faulty) memory. That'll learn me!

I was partially correct though that some (not all) of the track standards are a bit softer than usual, though not by quite as much as I thought.

Yes, I hadn't really looked at the field event standards - 16.95 & 14.30 for the TJ is tough. They were 16.50 and 13.85 in 2019! I guess that EA will just go down the season's list and invite athletes without the standard to fill those fields?

That's not a bad team selection if you ask me, plus there are more selections waiting to be confirmed via the re-arranged qualiication stipulations for athletes eligible to compete but without the mark/distances/times due to Covid restrictions.

seems a reasonable team, a bit weaker then recent years due to the abscence of muir - medal prospects - hodkinson, maybe a bronze in the womens 400, 4 x400 womens, porter in the 60 hurdles, bradshaw, mckinna, mills, giles, webb, gourley, butchart, pozzi , maybe dukes

British Athletics may not be good at much but they are very good at announcing the team quickly!
