Introducing the not remotely scientific Ursus Career Coefficient…..

There are peaks and troughs and tons of exceptions, but I generally think on the basis that a top class sportsman can have a roughly 10 year career at the top level. So the likes of Hodgkinson may be done and dusted by 30 having had a great career while Christie who didn’t really start seriously until his mid 20s carried on much longer. Training ages and all that.

You’ve also got the likes of Mondo and Jakob tearing things up. There have always been precocious talents in this sport, but it feels like we’re moving into a slightly different era. The fearlessness that the youngsters bring is great to watch.

McLaughlin has set a WR at 22 and even the likes of Warholm and Rojas have set WRs at 25 which you might ordinarily think is slightly before their real peak years.

As Mystery says as long as the youngsters are handled correctly, let them loose!

Asian Record 5.93 for Ernest John Obiena at the Golden Roof Challenge street meet in Innsbruck. Terrific crowd there making a lot of noise.

Anzhelika Sidorova won taking 3 vaults, over 4.65 at the 2nd attempt and then called it a night.

Jaz Sawyers was 2nd in the LJ with 6.32 behind winner Mironchyk-Ivanova, 6.55.

Great closing speed from Neita for the win. Terrible start and well down at 50m, but burned through the field very impressively. 11.04 (+.5)

Good win also for Jaz Sawyers 6.73. Beating a strong field inc Mihambo and Sagnia.


Even more impressive WL and AR from Allman in the DT. 71.16 !!

That throw by Allman has been bettered by Perkovic a couple of times but only by quite a small margin. Other than her, no-one else has thrown that far since 1992!

Sawyers performances have gone up a level this season, her base level now seems to be 6.70, where as in the past it was 6.60.

Sawyers has also made the step up to regular Diamond League competitor and has competed at quite a few more meetings as a result. Her busiest season.

Good stuff from Allman. That takes her to 18th on the all time lists.

That mark is only the 83rd best performance of all time - 58 of those above her were by Germans. The 80s really were a vintage era. :-)

Irrespective of anything else, wind conditions must have been pretty good the day Reinsch set the WR…..71.34 was only good enough for 4th!

Not a perfect fit for this thread, but very sad to see that mHT WR holder Yuriy Sedykh has died. Sergey Litvinov died in 2018 meaning that neither of the 2 longest hammer throwers in history even got to see their 67th birthday.

They both went over 86m. No-one else has legitimately managed over 85 (Tikhon got to within 1cm of Sedykh, but that was struck from the records for having been a naughty boy).

I'm quite impressed with how many Europeans and Americans are making the trip over.

one does not aspire to be the dreadful USA commentators; Maybe one hopes for a slightly more grown up attempt to be polite and give people the right sounding names. Its not as if the names are so hard even the poles can be pronounced with a certain professional competence Jennys latest attempt was Nanyando; whats so ruddy hard... Nanyondo.

Loath as I am to join in criticism of Jenny, who only ever conducted herself admirably as an athlete, I must admit that her performance as a commentator is not ideal. However, we have endured far worse: veterans of this forum will remember Dave Hooper and his virtuosic mangling of names in particular, and the English language in general, during the European Under-23s (I think that was the meet) a few years back. As LuckySpikes says, be careful what you wish for.

Those were the European U-20's and U-23's back in 2015 when European Athletics were making their tentative first forays into streaming those events online, and the commentator they had at the time was truly terrible as you say. Thankfully both the coverage and the commentary improved markedly as the years went on.
