If he runs 9.8 anything and under 20 secs in Tokyo i will wonder at this sudden enormous improvement;on anything from 2019 or earlier this year.
Apropos of nothing at all i read that the official figures for drug testing , due to the virus pandemic, have been well down in 2020; about 50 per cent of normal amounts.Suspicious people like me wonder how many of the considerable pbs this year around the world have taken advantage of this fact. The normal amount of testing did not happen till early 2021.
It was only about 10.3 it seems and presumably the timing for the 200 was way off too!

From the T&FN forum, "Both Laurent Meuwly and Pierre-jean Vazel, did some analysis [from the video], PJ including photos of the finish clock as each athlete hit the line. It was 10.3"

And WA have taken the time off their 2021 Toplists.

      L O L

Yeah, there was NO way Wilson had run 9.84... Considering he was nowhere *close* to the form he had during the 2018 season this year, dropping down from 10.3 to 9.84 was just ridiculous. I'm glad that WA have removed the performance from their 2021 toplists.

      • Couple of WLs that I’d missed in the field - 71.40 from Stahl in disc and a 17.92 TJ from Pichardo.

Even picked up on a 21.55 PB from the lesser spotted Jacko Gill.

          • Just caught up with Saturday's final round of the Hokuren Distance Challenge in Chitose, Japan.

It produced National Records in both the Men's & Women's 1500. Kazuki Kawamura ran 3:35.42 (3.4s PB) taking down Nanami Arai's 3:37.05 NR set in the States 2 months ago. And Nozomi Tanaka set her second NR in a week, improving her 2020 NR from 4:05.27 to 4:04.08.

18 year old Seira Fuwa was the first Japanese woman home in the 5000 'A' race, running a terrific 15.20.68, finishing really strongly (2:57 final km) and taking 5s off her PB.

            • On the Opening Ceremony broadcast Andrew Cotter said that Sifan Hassan is entered in 3 events but will be going for the 5/10 double. Does he have any special insider knowledge on that or do you think he's just guessing like the rest of us?

i think she will see how she goes and if necessary will just not turn up for one of the events as she feels.
Her races are as follows: Friday evening 30th 5 K heats which will be slow with a last lap or so burn up
Monday a.m. 1500m Round 1. Maybe Hassan hope s for an easy ride in the heats
Monday evening: 5 k Final That will be very tough for her.
                Wednesday 1500m semis
Friday evening 1500m final. This will be very hard after 4 races, but no way will she run away, as in Doha 2019.
Saturday evening 10 k Final. Another fierce race with the ethiopians

My view is she may be tempted after a tough 5k Final on the Monday to rest till the 10 k final with 4 days rest before attempting the 10k. impossible to tell till the last minute. Can she beat Kipyegon the 1500m. I think not.

                • i wonder how much athletics we will see live, especially if there is little GB interest in the Beebs view.
From previous OG athletics coverage by Beeb track and field will clearly take its turn, especially when there are important "youf" sports to be shown, like rock climbing, surfing, and f**king skateboarding.
When the WC are on they have been able to show live all the heats of the sprints and the other track with a sprinkling of field events, but that was with no other sports on at the same time.
I am not holding my breath this time round.

It seems pretty prominent in the Radio Times listings.

wonder if Gill will ever do what we hoped in his junior days.Unless he is regularly in the low 22s, he wont beat the American production line.

I'm praying that they'll have the athletics world feeds on the iPlayer like they did for Rio! The Australian guy they had commentating with Rob Walker was a bit odd - whenever talking about the runner in the lead he would say, "[insert name] is on the plinth" - but other than that it was great.

No chance. This year the BBC only have access to a maximum of 2 channels at any one time - basically what's on the main channel and 1 other Red Button/i-player stream. I can't see them using this for athletics too much, especially as main channel is likely to have all the track finals and at least some of the heats/qualifying (certainly those that have GB interest)

The full Digital coverage rights that we got from the BBC in Beijing; London & Rio is now owned by Discovery/Eurosport. If you have Eurosport as part of your TV package on Sky/Virgin/BT there are a number of pop up Eurosport Olympics channels which may have dedicated athletics feeds at some times if the coverage is not on Eurosport 1 or 2. Otherwise you need a subscription to Eurosport Player or Discovery+ - if you can afford this it's probably worth it I would say as this will give you access to pretty much everything and you can watch what you want. You want dedicated Triple Jump Qualifying, this is where you'll find it.

Would have thought you would be up on this Lucky Spikes

                        Precisely what i expected.
Track and field finals and Brit interest heats only on BBC. I would not bet on BBC showing any field events finals except with some Brit interest( meagre to say the least)
As i do not wish to watch oodles of some sports it means effectively looking at TV or computer for hours in the hope that they will go athletics coverage.
.Is it likely that at the start of the morning or evening Athletics sessions you will be told what events will be coming up on your screens??

Probably. There’s a guide to what’s on which channel over the whole Olympics in the new issue of the Radio Rimea which is quite helpful too.

For anyone without Eurosport or a VPN, maybe a month's subscription to Discovery+ is worth it at £6.99 - https://promo.discoveryplus.co.uk/pr...-discoveryplus (it includes what used to be Eurosport Player with all the extra streams that that carries).

To avoid it auto-renewing, remember to cancel it at any time before the month is up. It's probably best to cancel it straight away? You'll still get the full month you paid for.

                        • Due to injuries I didn't think we were going to see Konstanze Klosterhalfen in Tokyo but she's entered in the 10,000 and finished 2nd in the 5000 in 14:52 at the Sunset Tour in California last night. Josette Norris won in 14:51, Emily Infeld 14:54, Abbey Cooper 14:56 PB.

Josette Norris is a massive improver this year - she ran 3:59.72 in the 1500 last weekend!

                          • I hope none of the athletes who haven’t yet headed to Tokyo don’t miss their events by getting stuck in isolation because they didn’t leave enough time.

The US athletics team do seem to going out quite late and many of them are going via a stopover in Hawaii which itself doesn't seem a bad idea.

The US athletics team apparently cancelled their training camp in Japan a few weeks ago due to COVID. Not sure that was a good call by USATF
