Good victory for Giles and Webb this evening, beating some top guys, Murphyand Tuwei; but I note both Dobek and Dustin are in Fridays 800m together with Hoppel, Murphy and Giles. Exciting prospects.Comment

Also in Hungary, Maksim Nedasekau won a high quality men's high jump competition with a world lead-equalling 2.37 m clearance on the 2nd attempt. With it, he beat Ilya Ivanyuk who had to settle for 2nd place with 2.33 m, though he had a couple of mighty close near-misses at 2.37 m.
In 3rd place was fellow Authorized Neutral Athlete (aka Russian) Mikhail Akimenko, with the 2019 world championship silver medallist and former world U20 champion also clearing 2.33 m, equalling his season's best.

Miller Uibo looked a bit rusty to me, not having done many 200m races yet,a bit like another athlete i can think of.
Shaunae will be in Fridays 200m. I bet she is feeling a little more confident about her 400m chances now that Naser and the Namibians are not going to be in Tokyo.Comment

Giles needs to take a break from racing and get a training block in after Monaco - he’s packed a lot of races into a small window and whilst he’ll take confidence with him, fresh legs will be even more important. Webb should carry on racing, as he can train through the OGComment

The triple jump competition in Szekesfehervar I thought was a good one with Zango only 10cm behind Pichardo's brilliant 17.92, they seem well ahead of the rest of the world right now. Also Tom Walsh throwing 22.22 and looks to be coming back into form at the right time.Comment

Honestly, the way things are going in the triple jump this year, there is the very real possibility that there will be *no* Americans on the medal podium in Tokyo. With Taylor out (and even then, he wasn't looking too great before picking up his season-ending injury), his usual shadow Claye, who would be amongst the next in line to getting gold, has been performing well below par in 2021. All 3 Americans who qualified on the team, barely breached the 17 m mark at the nigh-perfect weather conditions at the rebuilt, super-fast Hayward Field 2 weeks ago.
Meanwhile, Zango is carrying his excellent form from the winter into the summer, and he's broken his own outdoor National and African continental records several times already, with no signs of slowing down. And after a few lean years, Pichardo is now back in the 17.90's with his effort yesterday, his best jump since 2018, and is a real contender again. Then you have to consider the always reliable Cuban challenge, with Andy Diaz occupying 3rd spot on the 2021 world list (17.63 m) (though it is a shame that World U18 and U20 champion and record holder Jordan Diaz, recently suffered an injury that's taken him out of contention), and Algerian Tricki setting national records almost every time he's competing recently, Zhu from China and even Dallavalle of Italy all having jumped further than any American has this year, it's going to take some sort of rejuvenation in Claye in Tokyo if he wants to finally get that gold he's always wanted. -
Could be that he knew he wouldn't have to be at his best to qualify with Taylor and Craddock gone. He'll probably be a lot better in Tokyo. But I guess I'm "blocked", huh?

Gyulai Istvan Meet July 6th: Yeargin -51.95 and Mielsen- 52.82. I was hoping that the women's 4 x 400 could somehow win a Bronze medal in Tokyo. Yeargin's long season and some other mediocre results have me thinking that we might be battling NED for 4th place, just outside the medals.Comment

The Dutch are missing a 4th runner to medal at this stage. I’d say GBR or Poland for bronze but I’ve not seen much of the Poles -
I noticed that Bol wasn't named for the Women's 4x400 team. But she is named for the Mixed relay which seems to be the one they're targeting. -
I think they can bring her in as she's in Tokyo anyway if they want to.

Looking at the times and performances from yesterday the Jamaicans did a lot better than the Americans considering their trials were both pretty tough. Sherika Jackson running sub 22 a week after making the team in both sprints was superb. SMUs first defeat in a long timeComment

I admit I forgot they had Mu to add. I think their main problem is if they try to be a bit too clever with adding in extra athletes in different rounds plus the mixed and someone who hasn't practised their handover messes it up on the day.
If only we had that problem (too many good athletes to include)... -
Jamaica's problem in the 4x1 is that there appears to be some acrimony between AFP and Elaine Thompson which means they don't want them on adjacent legs. -
US women could win the 4x4 with their hurdlers and Mu. It’s only injury or stupidity that’s stopping that gold medal.
W4x1 - I suspect Jamaica will win, but all three of their stars are doubling, which likely sees them resting at least two women. That said, Williams and Morrison and two others are more than enough to get through the heat and can practice more, given they’re just there for the relay. I suspect GBR might be closer to the US than some will give them credit for: Asha-Dina-Imani-Daryl is my prediction for the order
