We saw what happened when Sha'Carri Richardson ran her 10.75 world junior record at the NCAA Finals in 2019 come the US Trials a week or so later.... dead last and nowhere near the team. Anglerne Annelus *did* make the USA team after winning the NCAA's 200m in 22.16 and made the World Championship final where she came 4th, but was nowhere near as quick as she'd been on the college circuit throughout Doha 2019.

So we'll see what Sturgis and Clark have left in their tank when the Trials start next week... I'm not sure they will have much left after their efforts this season, indoors and outdoors.

History suggests that you may find their best was last evening

        • I think that psychologically and physically it can be very difficult to reach the same peak a week later. Also, I wonder if some actually miss being part of a team which is a big part of collegiate and high school athletics.

Maybe some athletes who underperformed on the day at the NCAAs are more likely to do well at the US Trials?

I cannot help reflecting on one particular athlete, Cambrea Sturgis, whose improvements in the 100m, for which T and F Formchart reckoned her third and 6th in the 200m, is a bit too exceptional for me.
Whilst we all know about these USA sudden athletic improvements; how envious for the rest of the worlds sprinters is it, when an athlete whose best in 2018 over 100m was 11.76 and in 2019 was 11.17 and in late May 2021, with no results shown for 2020, was 10.92 and now 10.74 just illegal.
I wonder what DAS thinks, who was a world junior champion 5/6 years ago and who flogged her way up to 10.88 only to be over taken by an athletes whose improvement has meteoric , to say the least.
Wonder if Neita is suddenly after some years, going to be in the 10.80 range. No chance!!. This American athletes best in the 200m jumped from 24.16 in 2018 to 22.40 in 2019. Wow.
I am extremely sceptical of this athletes amazing improvements so quickly ; she never competed as far as we know in 2020; mmm??
Some wiseacre said last year that he or she was concerned about the worlds athletes, in that pandemic year, even being tested at all and the NCAA do not follow the rules of WADA, apparently.
            Smells to me .

            • Rojas with a windy 7.27 (+2.7) and a legal 6.88. The double would be tricky in Tokyo as long jump preliminary is in the morning session of the Sunday with the TJ in the evening session. Would be a spectacular double were she to attempt it

Cambrea Sturgis did compete in 2020 indoors before the pandemic intervened including a 7.15s 60m. https://www.tfrrs.org/athletes/69889...ambrea_Sturgis

She is 22 now. Not sure why her improvement from 11.19 as a 19-year-old to 10.92 legal is so "suspicious" to you philipo? The standard of competition and the quality of facilities and training at US universities gives athletes the chance to reach their best. Some will burn out (just as they do with less quality competition in the UK) and maybe Sturgis won't achieve at the US trials after a long season, but she's a real talent. Tiny too like SAFP with a turnover to envy!

I've consistently said - 2020 not being a thing has totally messed up what could be natural improvement curves (e.g. Oliver Dustin).

So its down to training facilities: I believe talent and hard work with coaching is the most important issue and the super talents which appear withe great regularity in the States from nowhere should be replicated in this country or say France, Germany Italy even if infrequently. Doesn't happen, only across the pond
I believe there is a lot of naivety around about American clean? athletes
We are surely all aware of the history of cheating sprinters in America.
A lot of our sprinters are spending an increasing amount of time across the pond with wonder coaches, facilities etc: are you stating they are all un talented compared to the Americans,. if not why no comparable NCAA s
                uper improvements??
If only DAS had spent all her time in USA she might be running 10.60 s I suppose. Get away with it !!

Super! That's three with the 400 standard now and great news for the relay, with Laviai in the mix as well.

I don’t have Twitter so can’t see the vid, but I suspect a Beth Potter-style equipment miscalibration.

Some sources have it as +2.7. This is a video of the race. The Nigerian flag just outside the track suggests that it was pretty breezy.

Definitely looks like a +2.7 to me. Fast as anything whatever, and given she got smoked by Dina at Hengelo, what sort of shape is Dina in?!

                      • Based on the huge PBs for 2nd & 3rd, I'd say this is a timing malfunction or wind-reading error.
