  • 17yo Christine Mboma wins the 200 in 22.67 in Prague, coming from about 5 metres back off the bend, despite stumbling about 20m from the line. Controversy on the horizon.

UPDATE: PJ Vazel has her final 50m faster than both Schippers and Thompson-Herah when they went 21.6, despite stumbling quite noticeably and losing momentum in the final 20m. Never seen anything like it.

  • Tne Irish commentators on the famous "From the depths of Hell" commentary got it right when they referred to "future Olympian, Michelle Finn".

A 9 second PB for her in the Steeple in Turku, running 9:29.25.

A big 21s PB for 19yo Claire Palou (FRA) with 9:34.10, a performance that was coming based on her 4:12 1500 speed and a really good 2000SC race recently.

Worryingly Marusa Mismas pulled up injured with 650m to go, was in tears and was carted off in a wheelchair.

    • More Irish success in Turku ... Thomas Barr won in 48.39 from Magi 48.58. That's Barr's fastest time outside of a major championships.

Yep, the fastest time he's run since agonisingly missing out on an Olympic bronze medal in 2016.

Also probably the same for Rasmus Magi, good to see him back in form again.

Barr ran 48.31 for the Bronze at Berlin 2018.

For Rasmus Magi, it's his 4th fastest time ever. He's broken 49s every season since he first did it in 2014.

LuckySpikes thanks for teh corrections! Forgot about Barr's excellent performance in Berlin, plus Magi's sub 49 second consistency is something that several of our 400m hurdlers would kill for currently.

      • Just been watching some German athletics National championships ; awful and the worst standard i recall. Mihambo is out of form and not the jumper of 2019; cannot see her doing anything; won with 6.62m.
Proctor was awful tonight and is not in any form at all. Ben Williams who could not even make a jump in the Triple this evening is no doubt hoping if he manages to get a top two in Manchester his 2019 one off will give him a place in GB team ????

2019 two-off. He cleared 17m twice that year.

But I feel like at least for the last 20 years Germany have had very little depth in most events (bar the throws) and have relied on a few big stars to bring home the medals and paper over the cracks. People like Vetter, Mihambo, Klosterhalfen, Krause etc who are all by far the best in Germany at their events.

Like you say though, Mihambo's not looking great and Klosterhalfen is injured so I hear, so it looks like they could have a particularly lean time in Tokyo.

At least they seem to have found a new talent in the men's 1500m, that I was commenting about during the weekend. Robert Farken won the German championship in a new PB of 2:34.64, (incidentally, marginally quicker than Jake Wightman's mightily impressive 1500m victory at the FBK Games yesterday). His time took down the championship record that had stood since 1977! (2:37.66) and in the process, booked his ticket to Tokyo as well with the Olympic qualifying standard.

Just catching up with the rest of Prague now. Yes, I see what you mean! Shades of Seyni in 2019 and her last 100s in the 400.

            • There's a new name in the Women's 800 - in Hengelo at the Ethiopian Trials Werkwuha Getachew ran 1:56.67 NR, taking her PB down from 2:00.20 at altitude. There's no DoB info for her at World Athletics.
Habitam Alemu (now former NR-holder) was 2nd in 1:58.16.

One of a few amazing runs!

Can anybody shed some light on how the Ethiopians prep for trials? They always seem to turn up in Hengelo and drop seconds after not running for months. Camps back in Ethiopia? I've seen a few pictures that indicate that, but not actually sure.

Yes, I think that after their "pre-trials" competitions all the Olympic contenders are brought together to train together in camps in Ethiopia for 2 or 3 months.

                • One World Record and 5 World Leads at the Ethiopian Trials in Hengelo!

Sifan Hassan only held the record for 2 days, Letesenbet Gidey taking it down to 29:01.03.

                  Some significant re-writing of the all-time Top 5 or 6 in Women's 5000 too.

The best race was the Men's 10,000 with loads of old-school surging mid-race.

                  All the results at https://www.atletiek.nu/wedstrijd/chronoloog/35662/

Biggest casualties on the night (outside the top 3):
                  M 5000 - Muktar Edris (4th), Telahun Bekele (DNF)
                  W 5000 - Fantu Worku (4th)
                  M 10,000 - Hagos Gebrhiwet (4th), Getaneh Molla (9th), Tamirat Tola (11th)
W 10,000 - Yalemzerf Yehualaw (4th), Ababel Yeshaneh (DNF after trying to go with Gidey)

However, no-one really seems sure what the Ethiopian Federation's selection policy is. Is it the Top 3 go or is it 2+1 or maybe even 1+2 ?

                  • I can’t get too excited about another WR in the 10k, but there’s a fascinating race in the making for Tokyo based on the runs we’ve seen over the last few days.

Tseguy ran the 5000 at their trials, which is unusual considering her indoor WR at 1500.

A very good evening in the high hurdles with Weaver and Fillery breaking into the 13.4s along with Dave Kings run

Geoff Wightman on the YT Comms said it is a three stage process

January - Pre Qualifier - 6 Athletes selected per event.
                      April - National Champs
                      Now - Final trials

So presumably at the Jan & April events people are being selected for intensive national team training, altitude camps, medical attention etc etc. Of course, if you don’t make the team you are free to compete as an independent professional.

                      • Speaking as an official Old Geezer, I have seen middle & distance athletics go through these WR growth spurts before. Apart from the doping records, it’s down to technical or organisational progress.

Late 60s/early 70s - end of the old dirt tracks, arrival of all weather tracks.
Late 70s/early 80s - professionalisation & emergence of commercial televised meets
Early 90s - Emergence of professionally managed East African athletes.

Now we have this new combination of super shoes & computerised pace-making, opening up WRs long thought unbeatable. And what has always happened before is that eventually someone sets a genuinely outstanding record, after which everything will settle down for another decade or so
