  • Bit of a lesson for Keeley Hodgkinson - hopefully some wise words from her coach. No point in hanging back when the Africans go fast, you’ve got to go with them.

Holly Bradshaw out at 4.74 for third: Sandy Morris & Nageotte both up to 4.84. So another with work to do.

Adam Gemili another meh day in the 200m. De Grasse best run for a while but Bednarek wins. Peaking too early?

I mean, 20.58 ain't great but at least it isn't a 21! Trending in the right direction.

In fact, looking at Gemili's history, I'm not massively concerned:

      2019 - 1st August, 20.63 200m, 25th August 20.08 200m to win UK Champs, eventually 4th at World Champs
      2018 - 3rd June, 20.45 200m, 1st July 20.26 200m for 2nd at UK Champs, eventually 5th at Euros
      2016 - 11th June, 20.91 200m, 26th June 20.44 200m to win UK Champs, eventually 4th at Olympics

Looks like it's the same story again.

  • Dos Santos is in cracking form. Pushed Benjamin.

Decent for a season opener for Bradshaw. First time clearances up until 4.74. Sidorova off the pace.

Perkovic' reaction to that stupid final 3 format was spot on!!!

Kipyegon looks in cracking form in her 2nd best event, Hodgkinson not disgraced but plenty of lessons to be learned too. But that's why it's important to test yourself in these races.

    • Big NR for Ethiopia's Mekides Abebe, 9:02.52 in the Steeple, taking 4.5s off Sofia Assefa's NR.

Also a NR for Mishmash ! 9:16.82, taking 3.8s off her own mark.

      • Pretty good for young Rowden; showed confidence. Maybe Keeley should have copied that race plan.

I've often noticed that athletes who are generally in decent shape but are lacking in races, that they tend to be fine up until the last 20-25% of the distance and then fade. For example, this could be the last 20m of a 100m or the last 200m of an 800. After a few more races they tend not to fade any more. Rowden's race suggests to me that, in a few races' time, he could have a low 1:43 in him.

      • Dos Santos is looking like he could be a medal contender in 2 months time. Enjoyed watching the Serbian in the shot put, he could be the next to enter the 22m club

Faith Kipyegon should double up in Tokyo, she could have run 1:56 with more even splits. Jon Gault from letsrun listed her splits as 60.8/57.4 with a last 200 of 27.6

          • Ian Hodge has just reported that Jess Turner's run 54.77s over 400mH in Belgium. Three female athletes en route to the Olympics in that event!

Is that the best first two events in Decathlon history?

Yes it is. You'd have to be somebody like Carl Lewis to be confident of beating it!

            • Very impressive start from Warner. On for a good score

              • Johannes Vetter opens up with 94.24m in the ETC javelin competition, a distance only he and WR holder Zelezny have thrown in history with the current spec spear. Impressive.

                • Best ever Day 1 score for Damian Warner in Gotzis

                  • Don't know if anyone saw tonight's Steeple quarter-finals at the NCAA East Prelims?

Joyce Kimeli in Heat 1 ... Someone needs to tell her that she's not Beatrice Chepkoech!

At the SEC Championships 2 weeks ago (video here) her kilometre splits were 2:57, 3:22 & 3:28! Entirely predictably she got caught and didn't win.

Tonight she toned it down a bit, "only" running 3:02 for the first 1000. Then she wilted badly again and averaged 3:24 for the remaining two kilometres.

Just awful pacing which she got away with tonight but which won't serve her well in Eugene against the likes of Wayment, Gear, Konieczek & Jennings.

                    • Athing Mu continues to dominate... In the quarter-final to determine the top 12 who will complete in the NCAA Finals in Eugene in June, she further lowered her US U20 record with a 49.68 clocking. It also eclipsed Courtney Okolo's collegiate record set in 2016 and bettered her own stadium record from 15 days ago.

                        • Great, close racing in the W 800s at the East Prelims. Another PB for Katy-Ann McDonald, 2:01.67, 2nd in her heat and qualifying for Eugene. However, she was only 8th fastest on the night!
