  • Amazing run by Keely Hodgkinson. She's really looking like the real deal this year. European Junior Record.

Isn't European U20 Record 1:57.45 by Hildegard Ullrich?

Yes, but Ullrich was East German so ... ...

  • OMG 1.44 WL for Max Burgin.

    • Without wishing to sound crash, fuck me! That is unreal. If he can stay uninjured who knows what he could so in Tokyo

      • Phil Norman OQT in the Steeple, great job!

Kirani James 44:74, looked pretty easy.

Deep down, we all know you’re a fan!

Christian Taylor not looking confident in his legs.

          • Just got to see Burgin's run now... I think a lot of folks had no idea how good Max was with his youth and fleeting appearances limited to the UK... But with that outstanding performance today, he's introduced himself to the world and likely shocked some of the established 800m runners with that. 1:44.14! European U20 record, 16th on the World all time U20 list, and 12th on the UK senior all time list... Amazing stuff!

            • Hodgkinson and Burgin really announcing themselves. Also good stuff from Knight and Norman. Very pleasing to see.

But on a different level, Vetter continues making the rest of the world look silly. 94.20 is territory that only he and the Spear God himself occupy. Never thought I’d say it, but breaking one of the best WRs in the book is looking like a matter of time.

              • I turned to my wife and said: "Too bad Max isn't going to crush this large world-class field the way Keely just crushed hers."

                :-)

But seriously, between the young Brits dominating, and the outstanding HD wall-to-wall actual-athletics coverage on you-tube, I really enjoyed that meeting. (BBC please take note!)

an outstanding paced type of race in which Burgin will continue to shine; however, I await a two or three race global with no pacemakers and tactics galore in the race, before it is possible to judge Max who is still quite young. It will be instructive to see how he deals with the competition in our Trials next month.

                    I'm with you, philipo.

Obviously extremely talented and a great time-trialler with no bodies in front or around him. But, he's yet to prove himself as a "proper racer" at this level - his previous 3 races against the pros haven't gone great. A year older though, maybe he'll sort that out soon enough?

He's 18 and has just run 1:44.1. I don't expect him to even make the final at Tokyo, just being there at that age is a huge achievement

Well done Phil Norman too - he battled hard for that. Fastest time by a Brit since Tom Hanlon in 1994!

                      • I did notice something wrong at the time, but seemingly Christian Taylor did his Achilles last night. His key date is of course the US Trials.....

That stumble he had on the run up looked more serious than it was initially.

And it's a ruptured achilles tendon injury too. That's his season done for sure. We'll have a new Olympic triple jump champion for the fiirst time since 2008. Taylor's bid to become just the second man in history to win 3 straight Olympic titles for the TJ (USSR great Vikto Saneyev having done so in '68, '72 and '76) is now over.

? Viktor Saneyev won in 1968, 1972 and 1976. Plus a silver amongst some dubious judging in 1980.

Ahh, I was thinking that my statement might be in error. I'd watched a YouTube video Top Ten triple jumpers of all time and had Saneyev in at #5. I forgot that he'd won 3 Olympic titles in a row. I'll edit my prior comment to reflect this.

                      • That's rough for Christian Taylor - ruptured achilles can be a rough old injury. It's taken Cindy Sember several years to get back to her best.
