  • Athing Mu wins the 400m final in the SEC Championships with a 49.84 PB and facility record.... She is some athlete.

[Edit:] Forgot to add last night, with that run Mu now goes to 5th on the world all times list for U20s and becomes only the 7th teenager to run sub-50 seconds outdoors. Also easily the youngest member of the very exclusive sub 50 seconds/sub 2 minute club in the 400m/800m.
(I *still* have some reservations about the new U20 WR holder Mboma and new 3rd on the list Masilingi - though to be fair to both, they had been hacking big chunks out of their 400m PBs last year too.)

She ran just outside 50 seconds in the heat. If she had eased off more she could surely have gone faster in the final. I guess we can put that down to youthful enthusiasm.

She confirmed in an interview afterwards that unsurprisingly she would be targeting the 800m at the US Olympic trials. I wonder what she'll do at the NCAA champs?

A remarkable talent. Do you think she might look to doubling 400/800 later in her career?

It would be good to see her attempt the double at some point in the future.

  • Terrance Laird, world leader over 200m outdoors so far this season, flies down the track in the 100m final and wins in a scorching 9.80, though aided by a +3.4m/s following wind, upstaging teenage and YouTube sprint phenom Matthew Boling, though the latter still managed a 9.97 clocking in 2nd place.

    • Beautiful sunny day in the Podebrady park for the European RW Team Championships. The M 50km & W 35km has just got underway. The live stream is excellent.

      • Another result from America, this time from the "Big 12" collegiate champs, that I happened across on Jon Mulkeen's Twitter feed is that Rhasidat Adeleke, *still* reigning European U18 200m champion from Gyor 2018, ran 11.31 (+1.0m/s) over 100m, a new Irish U20 record, and 22.96 (+0.8m/s) over 200m, which is an outright senior Irish national record.

        • Occasional Hope I have no idea of Mu's future intentions, but judging by the interview she gave post race, she certainly has a confident enough personality to give the 400m/800m double a good old try.

          • Just to add to what Mu did yesterday in the 400m.... the time would likely have been 1 or 2 tenths quicker still if not run into strong headwinds on the home straight. (As is the common practice in collegiate athletics, the organizers had the 100m and 200m start from the opposite end of the track to have the wind aid the sprinters rather than hinder them) So that peformance was worth a 49.6/49.7 in more still conditions.. as an 18 year old.

Lord knows what she'll do at the NCAA Finals next month!

            • Just seen via Ian Hodge on Twitter that Yasmin Liverpool ran 51.73s over 400m at Nuneaton. A big breakthrough under 52 for the first time. Well done Stew-Coach

              • Two, well three, interesting debuts this week ...

Wed 19 May at the Castiglione meeting - the super-fast Namibian teenagers, Christine Mboma & Beatrice Maisilingi, are racing (the 400) for the first time outside Africa. If they haven't quite adjusted they might not have it their own way since Paulino (DOM) is also running - 50.31 this year.

Sat 22 May at the Andujar meeting - Francine Niyonsaba is making her 5000m debut against Genzebe Dibaba and Lemlem Hailu. I had previously read she was going to make a run for Tokyo in the 5000. So, I presume she's not there as a pacemaker - she's listed first on the entry list and usually pacemakers are listed last?

Very impressive given he is now 35.

Mboma & Maisilingi are no longer listed at Castiglione. Maybe travel difficulties or not satisfying COVID requirements??

What a shame; I was looking forward to seeing what they could do in Europe.

                • i see the arrogant over rated 100m runner known as Miss S. Richardson has finally been shown by her bad manners in Ostrava what some of us began to suspect; that she does not know how to behave in public and her drugged up coach has not been able to help her in this regard; maybe he could tell her that much greater athletes than she will likely ever be knew how to treat the Media and fans. Simple politeness.Even her fawning supporters on Track and field news are getting the message.!!

She really is objectionable, isn't she?! Not sure she's overrated - one of the nice things about athletics is that we have objective ways of measuring ability involving stop watches. With a better start and tailwind she can run close to 10.60 this year.

Another nice thing about athletics is that it is inevitably humbling - sooner or later the most arrogant athletes get put in their place. Not sure it will happen to Richardson this year but one day .. .. .. .. In the meantime, she's good box office.

                    • I hope the arrogant little madam falls flat on her face. Literally.

And I'm just waiting for a journalist to ask her about her close association with a convicted doper. Will the Daily Mail or The Sun be at the press conference in Gateshead?

                      • Oi, Jessie Knight new PB, Nielsen drops out in tears.....hopefully just a botched race rather than an injury.

No-one ever felt sad because Gatlin got beat.
