  • And just now in the men's 800m A race, Archie Davies pipped European U-20 silver medalist Ben Pattison to the line in 1:46.73... If that time is confirmed, then it would be a European U-23 qualifying time for 20 year old Pattison.

    • Bell ran lap 1 aggressively, and looked mightily disappointed in what was a pretty great time. So presumably her form is well sub 2.

Very aggressive first lap from Bell and had she not been running into the teeth of the stiff, unseasonably cool wind down the final straight, that would likely have been in the 1:58 region. She seems in good shape this year for sure.

How many British athletes - past or present - could have run 2:00.2 on their own from 350m in those cold conditions? And in May?! She would have certainly beaten Reekie and Tracey based upon their runs the other week. Agree that was worth 1:58.

      • Very good run by Alex Bell.

        • Some good runs in Manchester considering the conditions. Niclas Baker 46.37 and Charles Carvell (16 years old) 46.64, both PBs

Carvell is a talent. Seems strong as an ox. At the rate of the rest of our 400m runners are going, he may end up on a flight to Tokyo for the relay...

        • Yeah, I'm cheering Alex Bell on. She's been hard done by by the British selectors in the past so I hope she can prove something this year.

Re Sovietvest's comments ... Melissa Bishop was 0.7s back from Tracey & Reekie in that Eugene race but then ran 1:59.40 the following week, so you never really know! With the Mt Sac race tomorrow I guess we'll see soon enough what shape they're in.

Definitely looking to be one of the most competitive events at the British trials, and a headache for the selectors for the third slot if more than one contender runs the 1500 at trials instead...

So near but yet so far. I would not have selected her on merit. World class on complaining though.

        • philipo, did you spot any of the promised technology innovations at the Gold meeting in Tokyo? To be honest, reading the article, I wasn't that clear about what I was looking out for!

lucky, try as i amy i cannot see the results of the Tokyo meet assuming its happened and my japanese aint quite good enough. Maybe you have managed to suss out whats happening and i certainly hoped to see the technical innovations. I didn't do the VPN stuff so maybe i will not get to hear of any Japanese results despite your help with the info you gave us all.

i agree that the stated tech stuff was a bit confusing; ceratinly to an old lag like me.

              • finally got the livestream from Tokyo; the standard i have watched so far is moderate to say the least and the test event is certainly needed; noticed that the norm in the LJ showing the centimetres behind the board for each jump is not shown on the screen; the tech innovations are invisible as far as i can see.
Hopefully tonight a bit more to get excited about.

                • I have been watching the European Throwing cup over the last couple of days but was disappointed to find that there was only 3 entrants from the Uk.All 3 all did well in the comps and I am sure we have a lot more athletes in Seniors and under 23 who have the standard to compete at this level if given the chance

                    • Startlists (turning to live results) for Mt Sac tonight - https://results.usatf.org/2021GoldenGames/

The first event on the WA stream is the Men's 400 at 9.33pm.

A couple of notable withdrawals in SMU & Brazier but it seems like all the Brits we expected are still there (some in events or 'B' races not being shown by WA).

                      • Laps, was it Berlin 2018 when Alex Bell wasn't selected and Adelle Tracey went instead? To be fair, Adelle did well, finishing 4th in the final but I think Alex had a right to complain about what the selectors said about her to justfy their decision - that she's not a big championship performer.

Up to that point her only major championships had been the 2018 Comm Games where she outperformed all the other Brits (Sharp, Tracey & SOC), finishing 5th in the Final, the only Brit to make it out of the heats to the Final.

Then, in Doha 2019, she again outperformed Sharp & SOC, finishing 5th in her Semi. Sharp went out in the heats, and SOC was 8th in her Semi.

No. Complaining about selection only makes you a whinger. She should prove herself demonstrably better on the track. Let's see her run 1.58 and beat Reekie and Tracey in a meaningful race.

The others had all shown greater possibilities for getting into finals. Which is why I still think the selectors made the right calls at the time.

                      • Michelle Lee-Ayhe was running (poorly) in the 200m 'B' race at Mt Sac ... I thought she was suspended for 3 missed tests??
