Precisely, Ursus. We dont yet know if this talent is available more than a couple of times a year in DL races.Does not appear that he can sustain a full years racing, a shame but that's the body for you.

But take a step back.....it's not just Max.
Charlie Dobson and Amy Hunt come with similar injury stories. Is it a case of too much too soon with the training. Or another reason? Might be worth some analysis. Are they not all based at Loughboro? Mebbe the Sports scientists there can shed some light?👍 1Comment

I'd actually forgotten all about Amy Hunt. what's going on with Ed Faulds also? -

Amy Hunt's injury was such a shame, because she was looking really, really good in the early winter season.
As for Ed Faulds, he is back in action. In fact, if you were watching the UK U20 Championships last weekend, Faulds was in the 400m heats (which he won quite comfortably). He'd made his season debut a few days earlier at the Birmingham University meeting (the same meet where Jodie Williams also made her return to action after injury). Faulds didn't run in the 400m final, but he has been named as a member of GB's 4x400m relay squad (which I'm going to write about in the U20/U18 thread) so I think his outing in Bedford was to show that he was fit enough for the relay. -
Ah that's great. I saw he was in the relay squad. His run last year was dreamy!

It seems that twitter active anti vaxers are jumping on Max's DVT diagnosis as evidence that the vaccine causes blood clots.Comment

Only competed 11 times in 4 complete seasons before this year.
COVID notwithstanding that’s not great and you do wonder whether we’ll ever see the best of this talent.Comment

Ursus - where are you? Out in Budapest? So far so good for Burgin... one race at a time.
Was somewhat irritated by something that was said on here, so taking a break from the forum.Comment

Some final words on Max as he bows out of the championships. Did he get it tactically wrong last night? Maybe but he has had success with that tactic at both British trials and U18 championships in the past, this time he just didn't have the fitness/ conditioning to pull it off. He ran 1.44 from the front last year at British trials (and 1.45 this year) so he can at least do much better than the 1.47 last night suggests. His post race interviews suggest he didn't feel great on the 2nd lap. I hope he makes it to a champs with full fitness to at least put his front running ability to the test in a championship setting when he is in good shape, if it doesn't work out in that scenario then maybe its time for a rethink.
There is also a lot of talk about how fragile he is and if he can string a whole championship/ season together, although I appreciate that talk wont go away until he has a full season/ performs consistently, he has had a lot of bad luck. The blood clots for example were not a typical sporting injury. This year it was the Achilles, which they will now get to the bottom of ASAP and shouldn't cause him trouble next year. He also said that he plans to run indoors for the first as he needs more experience racing, which also seems like a good plan.
Finally he is only 21 and he has time on his side. Josh Kerr for example didn't make it out of the heats at his first world championships, and it then took him another two attempts before he got the gold. Jake Wightman didn't make it out of the heats at his first commonwealth games and went to 2 world champs and 1 Olympics before he medalled. So I am optimistic that one day we will see him win a global medal. He definitely has the talent and dedication.Comment

Nice extended interview with Max. Lots of details on his injury woes, his running tactics, training, the DVT, Budapest and his plans for next year. They are still trying to figure out what the Achilles problem is.

A good listen. He comes across as an articulate, open and frank lad with some interesting insights. Spoiler alert, if 'fit and in good shape' he would consider running indoors next season, the achilles issue [as MR_ME notes] is ongoing and he has never run a 400m though he'd like to think a 46.xx was in him but hasn't used blocks previously... Cheers for the link. -
You'd have to feel he has a fast 400m in him!

Do any of our young 800m runners have the potential to go on and be sub-1.43 runners challenging for global titles. A guy like Ben Pattison will always have a chance of medalling at 1.44 pace, but can he, Burgin, Dustin or any of the others in that emerging group step up further?Comment
