Friday to Sunday

• Asian Indoor Championships (Astana, KAZ) - I'm looking forward to this! I'm pretty sure it's the first time these championships have been live streamed. So far only the startlists for Day 1 are out but there's some quite good fields, e.g., with five 8m men in the LJ and four 800m men at 1:46.3 or faster. In the Women's 3000 Ririka Hironaka (JPN) has a tough race because Norah Jeruto & Caroline Kipkirui are being wheeled out for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan
• Polish U20 & U18 Indoor Championships (Rzeszów, POL) - There's some very good athletes competing here including big 16yo talent Zuzanna Wiernicka in the U18 2000m. She's already run sub-6:00 indoors for the distance

Friday

• ISTAF Indoor (Berlin, GER) - World Indoor Tour Silver meeting; 60, 60H & Jumps; This is quite loaded. The Women's LJ features the first 4 from Munich 2022 along with Iapichino. Amongst others competing are Duplantis, Britany Anderson & Luckenkemper. There's 6 Brits due to line up - Sawyers, Neita, Prescod, Azu, Philip & King

As I said last time, I'm posting this now because I'm away from Monday morning until Thursday afternoon.

Where there's detail missing in the document I've indicated where you'll find it in due course - whilst I'm away I may or may not have time to update the document with the actual details.

Thursday's Tampere Indoor Meeting (Bronze) is being live streamed but for a hefty price (9.90 Euros) so I haven't listed it in the document. However, in the comments below I have posted the entry lists for your interest.

Tuesday

• Beskydská laťka (Třinec, CZE) - World Indoor Tour Silver meeting; International High Jump meeting; Pretty good fields it seems. The headline athletes teased by the meeting website are Gerashchenko, Vukovic & Tabashnyk in the Women's and Zayas, Rivera & Moura in the Men's

Wednesday

• Copernicus Cup (Toruń, POL) - World Indoor Tour Gold meeting
• Mondeville Meeting (Mondeville, FRA) - World Indoor Tour Silver meeting; Live on YouTube with English commentary; If most of the entry list turn up this will be another strong Silver meeting in France. Pretty much right across the board the fields look very nice. In particular, the Women's 1500 looks very interesting and could be fast with the 3 Ethiopians running. A total of 10 Brits are entered

Thursday

• Victorian Milers Club Meet 4 (Aberfeldie, VIC, AUS) - John Higham 800m & Mile incl Victorian Mile Championships; No idea who's competing here yet. The Vic Milers meets have yet to really take off this season with the big Aussie names keeping their powder dry so far. Perhaps that will start to change with these 800s and the Vic Mile Championships which usually attract good domestic fields
• Udin Jump Development (Udine, ITA) - International High Jump meeting; In both the Women's & Men's field there's 2 of the headline athletes I listed above for Tuesday's Třinec meeting and added to them here are, amongst others, Patterson & Vallortigara in the Women's and Protsenko, Fassinotti & promising youngster Sandro Tomassini (SLO) in the Men's

Ha, I'm not sure the bit in bold is true but thanks anyway! Ask me about Japanese 400m running or shot putting and my knowledge is pretty basic. Because the on-demand streams I watch are often long, I usually skip through them to just watch the mid-distance and long-distance races. I'd like to try to improve that other knowledge though.

No, I have no prior connection to Japan at all but there's a few reasons why I've become such a big fan of Japanese distance running:

a) There's a ton of Japanese track & field and road racing on the live streams and I'm the kind of fan who needs to watch a lot of athletics to be engaged. Most of it's on YouTube or national TV and there's a really good site for the latter, so it's all easy to watch. I need to see faces and get to know the athletes a bit. I can't do that by mainly reading results.

b) Related to that, the coverage of big road races and Ekidens on national TV is brilliant - "next level" stuff - just a pleasure to watch. Every country should copy how Japanese TV covers road racing!

c) I love athletes who race a lot and many Japanese distance runners do just that. It's not uncommon for them to run say six 5000s and 4 or 5 10,000s a year, especially those at their "B" level, e.g., 31-high female 10,000 runners. I don't find it easy to be a big fan of athletes who hardly ever race (with a few exceptions like Kipchoge). I need to see them in action quite regularly.

d) I'm fascinated by the Ekiden culture ... the tradition, the honour of competing for your team and that everyone gives their absolute all to it no matter whether their team is lying first or last. Pretty much all their best distance runners run at least one Ekiden a year. In what other country does/would that happen in road relays? It used to in Britain 40 years ago but not now.

e) There's a lot of depth and so a ton of athletes to follow. And they have a surfeit of young talent at the moment. Some is already established like Ryuji Miura, Nozomi Tanaka, Ririka Hironaka, Seira Fuwa & Kaede Hagitani but there's also a load of very good 17-19 year olds at the moment - e.g., Keita Satoh & Hiroto Yoshioka (both 13:23 for 5000 at 18yo) and, on the Women's side, Kokone Sugimori & Haruka Kokai - just turned 20 the latter is poised, I think, for a good breakthrough on the track after some excellent recent Ekiden legs.

Live streams/broadcasts for Saturday 4th February to Sunday 5th February:

Thank you trevorp and CAML for your kind words. I've been doing the Live Streaming Links for close to 6 years now - I don't know the exact start date because the old AW forum disappeared into the ether but I think it was around March 2017. I know that the amount of live streamed athletics watched by people here varies a lot and there will be some events that only I watch (sometimes not even me - there's only so many hours in the day!) However, even if people don't watch a lot, I think it might help them keep tabs on what's going on and who's competing where, perhaps motivating them to seek out results ('motivating' is probably the wrong word). And, maybe, they've also learned the names of a few more Spanish XC runners and Japanese distance athletes!

Anyway, on to a packed weekend of live streams with several very good indoor meetings, 3 good international cross country meetings and a couple of top road races from Japan ...

European Athletics are really spoiling us this weekend with 3 English commentary events on YouTube - the Silver & Bronze meetings in Val-de-Reuil and Ghent and also the European Champion Clubs Cup Cross Country.

Sadly, not live streaming, it seems, are 2 pretty loaded road races in Spain - the 10K Donostia Gimnástica de Ulía and the International Half Marathon of Granollers, Les Franqueses & La Garriga.

The Indoor Combined Events Tallinn meeting is behind a paywall but I think there's probably less UK interest in that now because Sam Talbot, Niamh Emerson & Kate O'Connor have all withdrawn. Therefore, I haven't listed it in the document.

The Balkan U20 Indoor Championships were due to be held on Sunday. However, a few weeks ago the Serbian Athletics Federation pulled out of hosting it due to financial difficulties and it was too late to arrange an alternative venue.

Saturday to Sunday

• Japan Indoor Meet in Osaka (U20, U18 & U16) & Japanese Senior Championships (Osaka, JPN) - Just 60, 60H & jumps; There's very, very few indoor meetings in Japan but for the senior championships these are strong fields, especially on the track, with hardly any of their best missing (a few are currently in Europe preparing for the Asian Indoor Championships next weekend). The depth of the fields is quite impressive at the "Japanese level". The fields look good for the age group events too
• Italian U23 & U20 Indoor Championships (Ancona, ITA) - There's some good fields here and it's hard to pick some stand-out events but the U23 Men's 400 looks good with several athletes at 47.0 or faster; The Previews linked in the document do a pretty good job of picking out the highlights
• Spanish U23 Indoor Championships (Antequera, ESP) - There's some competitive looking fields here but perhaps not quite of the overall quality of the Italian U23 fields above. One of the expected stars is 1:46.9/3:39.5 man Mohamed Attaoui who goes in the 1500

Saturday

• Lagos City Marathon (Lagos, NGR) - WA Gold Label race; No idea who's competing here but 76 (!) international athletes have been invited and it is usually a good quality race
• Sirikwa Cross Country Classic (Eldoret, KEN) - World Cross Country Tour Gold meeting; There's strong fields here including Faith Kipyegon, Irene Cheptai, the Chepkirui's Sheila and Purity, Naomi Chepngeno, Rose Chelimo and in the Men's race, World 10,000m silver medalist Stanley Waithaka Mburu, Nicholas Kipkorir (I think it's the one AKA Kimeli) Merhawi Mebrahtu (ERI), Benson Kiplagat & Amos Serem as well as the top 3 from the recent Kenyan national championships. Interesting European entrants include Marusa Mismas, Alexandru Soare (ROU), Sondre Moen & Johannes Motschmann (GER)
• Hustopečské skákání (Hustopeče, CZE) - World Indoor Tour Silver meeting; International High Jump meeting; This is pretty loaded! Amongst the athletes competing are Patterson, Vukovic, Gerashchenko, Lake & Zialor and in the Men's, Woo, Starc, Kerr, Zayas & Gasch
• ORLEN Cup Łódź (Łódź, POL) - World Indoor Tour Bronze meeting; 60, 60H & field; Annoyingly the entry lists have disappeared pending the publication of startlists but from what I recall of a brief glance they looked quite good. Home stars like Ewa Swoboda & Skrzy are competing as well as Marcel Jacobs and the Men's PV is quite strong
• Meeting de l'Eure (Val-de-Reuil, FRA) - World Indoor Tour Silver meeting; This looks like a super meeting with a number of excellent fields and several big names competing such as Mahuchikh, PML, Katir, Welteji & Murto. There's 6 Brits slated to compete including Gemili, Copeland (vs Katir in a strong 1500 field) & Markovc (3000 vs Welteji & Klein)
• IFAM Gent Indoor (Ghent, BEL) - World Indoor Tour Bronze meeting; There's good fields in nearly every event here with some very international line-ups (including a number of my Japanese friends!) It's hard to pick the stand-out events but there's a lot of very good athletes competing. There's 15 Brits due to line up including Prescod, Coppell, Laviai Nielsen, and Wallace & Reardon in some good 800s
• New Balance Indoor Grand Prix (Boston, MA, USA) - World Indoor Tour Gold meeting; I'm excited to see Our Laura making her seasonal debut in the 3000. Is 8:25 too much to hope for?
• Camel City Elite (Winston-Salem, NC, USA) - 800, Mile & 3000; This meeting had it's heyday for a couple of years. A bit surprising when, at $6,000, the winning prize money is better than a Gold meeting but, I suppose, it doesn't carry many ranking points; Anyway, this year the fields are solid but without having any real big star names

Sunday

• Kagawa Marugame International Half Marathon (Marugame, JPN) - WA Elite Label race; Whilst the international depth in the Men's race is slim (Rayner & Mutiso) there's a good Women's field lined up with Nancy Jelagat, Pauline Kamulu, Purdue, Batt-Doyle (AUS), Diver & Sarah Pagano (USA) included. The domestic entry in this race is always pretty strong on both sides and this year it includes the evergreen Yuki Kawauchi. It's a fast course with Aussie Men's & Korean Women's national records set here in 2020
• Beppu-Ōita Mainichi Marathon (Beppu to Ōita, JPN) - WA Elite Label race; International Men's marathon; Another good field here for this old race with 9 sub-2:08 men from Kenya, Morocco, Djibouti & Japan and a further 7 sub-2:10 men. It's another very important race for the Japanese athletes hoping to qualify for the MGC (their Olympic Trials) and maybe even hit the Japanese standard for Budapest Worlds set at 2:07:39
• European Champion Clubs Cup Cross Country (Oropesa del Mar, ESP) - There's good races on tap here with a lot of very good athletes, for example, Amebaw, Machado, Fancy Cherono & Meselu Berhe in the Women's and Kwizera, Oscar Chelimo, Vincent Rono, Italo Quazzola & Efrem Gidey (IRL) in the Men's. Added to that Spain have 4 clubs entered (?!) in the Women's race and a lot of their top athletes are competing such as Sanchez-Escribano, Robles, Barreiro, Marques, Naima Ait Alibou & Tarraga. Aimee Pratt is also running, now competing in the green & white hoops of Sporting Club de Portugal (Lisbon). They've got a pretty good team. The Mixed Relay also includes some very good athletes such as Winnie Nanyondo
• Gran Premio Cáceres Cross Country (Calzadilla, ESP) - World Cross Country Tour Gold meeting; Not the strongest of fields here, no doubt suffering from the clash with the ECCCC above. With Yann Schrub & Isaac Kimeli in the Men's race there definitely seems to be an effort by some Europeans to use the Cross Country World Rankings as a route into the 10,000m at Worlds. A good thing if it gets more athletes competing regularly in Cross Country! The Women's race is decent without having any really big names although there are a couple of top Spaniards competing in Laura Luengo & Cristina Ruiz. This may be the last of the Spanish meetings on this season's World XC Tour but there should be at least one more good meeting from Spain on the streams at the end of the month
• Rochlitz Shot Put Meeting (Rochlitz, GER) - World Indoor Tour Challenger meeting; Not super-deep fields here, headed by Dongmo & Gambetta in the Women's and Weir & Abdelrahman (BRN) in the Men's
• RIG Games AKA Reykjavik International Games (Reykjavik, ISL) - World Indoor Tour Challenger meeting; As in years past England has sent a team to compete here that this weekend includes Lee Thompson, Dan Putman, Alexander Farquharson & Jessica Tappin. There's the occasional other non-Scandi athlete competing such as Naomi Sedney in the 60 & 200 and Chase Ealey. With the inclusion of a lot of domestic athletes the level of ability top to bottom in some fields varies a lot
