2019 IAAF WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS (Doha, QAT) Day 7

There should be lots of tension today with KJT vs Thiam, and Kevin Mayer not looking at his best in the dec; plus Shaunae Miller Uibo vs Naser in the 400 final, and the semis of the w1500 which should tell us more than the heat.

With up to date PBs as of yesterday, a full house of PBs for Thiam over a full hept would now be 7,433 points, KJT 7,312. Given tht 302 points are gifted via the javelin marks, it's impressive how much KJT brings back in the other events. Only 96 points deficit now in SP. Just imagine the points if she could close that javelin down.

kjt wins the pentathlon, thiam wins heptathlon, all down to that javelin, kjts better over the running events, thiam the throws and they are both roughly equal on the jumps

on the B of the BANG, not sure if I am correct to attribute that to Linford Christie, but these Beeb retrospectives are making me feel very old ... Just watched the Christie one and the 1996 music chosen, was Spaceman, by Babylon Zoo, ... I had a lovely lady friend then who looked exactly like the girl in the advert that made the song popular, where is she now....

      C'mon KJT!!

Very safe, very average first jumps from KJT & Thiam. Valid jump was important, but she could have really laid the gauntlet down there.

            6.25 Thiam, 6.32 KJT R1

I'd rather see her get one on the board than go for something big on the first one. I'd pessimistically expect her to land a big foul in the second round, then Thiam achieve a big final jump and KJT underperform in round 3. But let's hope yesterday's results and a sold first jump give her confidence in her runup.

I like the innovation with the overlay showing the points scored (in a Hep) for a jump rather than the distance...

6.50 to 6.60 would put a lot of pressure on Thiam now.

are the combined events points different to the IAAF points tables? (The answer is clearly yes) - but why?

The combined events tables are intended for scoring combined event competitions while the IAAF points tables are for comparisons between individual events. The IAAF tables are the only one that include events like Steeplechase, Triple Jump and Hammer. The combined events tables don't really work for comparisons between events. For example, 1000 points in the decathlon 1500 equates to 3:53.79 which would be a fabulous time in a decathlon but wouldn't get you in the top 100 in the UK while 1000 points in the HJ is 2.21 which would put you in the top 5 in the UK and most other countries.

Only 6:40 for Thiam. 120 points advantage in the LJ for KJT at least.

And Thiam can "only" improve to 6.40m on her final effort.... Interesting times indeed.
